My second post already? This is starting to get fun 🙂 Yesterday, I made my first appearance as Miss Teenage GTA 2014, and I’m so excited that I just had to write a post about it!
As many of you may know from my last post, I’m Albanian. There’s a television show that caters to the Albanian community in Toronto called Pasqyra Shiptare (which translates to “Albanian Mirror”). It begun airing in 2002, and stars prominent Albanian figures and speaks of community events. My family watches this every Saturday at 2pm (its airing time). It’s great that we’ve found ways to keep our Albanian culture even though we’ve adapted to the Canadian lifestyle since we’ve immigrated here. This show is one of them!
When I won the title of Miss Teenage GTA, I thought it would be a good idea to email the director, Ilir Lena, to see if I could be a part of an episode. I’m very proud of my background and wanted to use the title to represent the Albanian community and show everyone where I come from. I was so surprised when I heard back from him, agreeing to interview me for the show! The first thing I thought of was “I’m going to be on TV!” Haha, childish, I know! 😛
But then I suddenly realized that because the show is in the Albanian language, my interview will be in Albanian…which means I would have to speak in Albanian. I moved to Canada when I was 2, so obviously my Albanian speaking skills aren’t that great. I understand the language perfectly, but because I don’t practice speaking often, it’s one of my weak points. So I began to get nervous.
Luckily, Ilir sent me the questions he was going to ask ahead of time, so I could practice. Phew! So with my mom’s help, I went through them, answering the questions, and fixing up my speaking and grammar mistakes. There were times I felt frustrated simply of the fact that I wasn’t good at speaking in my native language. But it makes sense- practice makes perfect, and I simply don’t practice speaking Albanian often. I’m going to make it a goal of mine to practice more often. But I tried my best and stayed calm. At least I have good interview skills!
The interview actually went more smoothly than I thought! 🙂 Ilir made me feel very comfortable; it felt like I was having a regular conversation with him! Surprisingly, the camera didn’t make me nervous at all! I was asked about my first memories in Canada, my future ambitions, my family, my hobbies, and my pageant! It was so fun!
My interview airs on Pasqyra Shiptare this Saturday at 2pm on OMNI 1. I’m excited to see how it turns out and I hope everyone tunes in to watch me on TV! (If you don’t speak Albanian, you probably won’t understand what I’m saying, but don’t worry, there’s pictures to go along with it haha!) It’ll also be on their website if you missed it!
I can’t wait to see what’s next in store for me as Miss Teenage GTA 2014!
